one for my 33 list

one for courtney (wednesday [june 24th] will be one year since we last got back together, and marks the first consecutive year that we’ve stayed together. however, we still consider our anniversary to be the 23rd of august)

amazingly enough, they’re all pretty good

now i just have to buy some peanut butter cups to send to kirra and i’m all set

(I know I posted about this the day after I did it, but I finally got it up on myspace and facebook, so it'll be easier to listen to.)

I present to you "Debutante Waltz". I made it as a gift to Courtney, but I hope you enjoy it as well.

I'm currently waiting on Nina to write lyrics/do vocals for "Fawn", the song I did a couple days before this one.

because i can't stand up straight. or walk straight. or turn my head without almost falling over.

i was supposed to work today. courtney and i are supposed to see isis and pelican tonight. this sucks.
not only has a day of working and MAKING money gone out the window, but the money i spent on going to the show is now going to waste (which really, really sucks, because i really, really wanted to see that show).

what the fuck is wrong with me?

i have spent all weekend doing exactly what i want to do with my life: film score.
i completed the score for a 13-minute film called "138 Arlington", directed by Meagan Hoecke.
i was pulled into the project by my dear friend Nina, who is editing the film.

besides the fact that i fell in love with the film almost immediately and felt a deep connection with it, film score is what i want my life to be. i'm so glad that my first opportunity to do a score was on something i really enjoyed. i spent about three hours on friday, five hours yesterday, and five hours today working on it. in retrospect, that doesn't even sound like a lot for how much i accomplished.
i tried to keep the score relatively minimal, usually with only one instrument playing at a time. i used a lot of toned-down guitar and based some of the chord structures on an old song of mine called "snow" (which i used a newly created, much shortened version of for the end credits).

unfortunately, i have no way of showing you the film with the music, yet.
however, i can show you the main climactic piece of music that leads into the end of the film and then into the credits. i'm very proud of it, and i hope you enjoy it!

go to my facebook and listen toArlington D in the music player on the left.
(i will have it up on my myspace as soon as it will let me log in.)

please please please let me know what you think! i know it's hard because you're not seeing the film, but i hope you can give me some kind of critique.

this spring seems to be finding me in a wonderfully productive state.
i have just completed another song (my third in the last two weeks) entitled "is it really worth it?" the title was inspired by a discussion i had with my friend adrianna.

listen on myspace
or on facebook

and if any of you haven't friended me (on myspace) or become a fan (on facebook), please do. it doesn't affect you negatively, it's not like adding an application, it really just makes me feel like less of a loser.

for all you myspacers.
pastulio commands you!

no, really, i love this song. it's kind of the antithesis of "quietly", although many of the same techniques were employed.

and, damnit, let me know what you think this time! (although thanks to those who did on the last song, it means a lot to me)

well, i'm hoping this trend continues, because after completing "quietly" the other day, i came up with, recorded, and (pretty much) finished a brand new song today. i'm trying to get back to doing simpler things, and this seemed to be the perfect re-start to that.
i wrote a simple bass line and recorded it, put some drums over it, and then did two guitars and that was it. it's only three minutes long and it's great. as much as i love long, complex songs, sometimes simple and concise is better. it can also really help me stay on a creative streak if i don't get stuck on one idea for too long.

anyway, the song is mostly finished just because i need to mix it a little better. i was rushing because i was supposed to pick courtney up from work and i was running late. the drums could sound a little better, the guitars need to be panned a little, and the low end drops out in the chorus because i switched to a distorted bass and i didn't EQ it well.
so as soon as i fix it tomorrow, i will have it up for you to enjoy. although, if you want to hear the rough draft, let me know. i can always e-mail it to you.

courtney thinks it's sexy, and i'm inclined to agree. it was half inspired by the nick cave song "fable of the brown ape" and half by the stooges song "dirt". i'm really liking the musical pathways i seem to be traversing right now. let's see where they take me.

oh, i shaved today for the first time in i can't even remember when. courtney helped me trim my beard with scissors first so i wouldn't clog the drain, which was a tedious process. i now understand why ritchie tenenbaum tried to kill himself... (joking. that's the most heartbreaking scene in any movie, ever, and i will always love ritchie)

(for courtney)

shakespeare had it right
but i think i said it better
when tragedy strikes
there's only one thing to remember
stay your hand, speak quietly
death is quiet as can be
hide your face behind your teeth
grin-fuck all who care to see

well i just grab her by the cheeks
and i lick my lips and breathe
be as quiet as can be
baby hush, now, don't you scream
you are mine, as sure as i am yours

the fires of hell will lick your dirty heels
and the devil will cry as he swallows up your fear
he wants you all his own, he wants your pretty soul
but he knows you don't belong to him
your heart is mine to hold

i'm as quiet as can be
and i take a hold of destiny
there is so much more to see

lift me up
and carry me across the ocean
we can never drown

I HAVE COMPLETED A FUCKING EPIC SONG!

please, please, please go enjoy it! it's called "quietly"

you can go to my facebook music page, which i would prefer, since they don't really compress music files, so they still sound good. and if you still haven't become a fan of my facebook music page, it would make me really happy if you could do that.

or, if you suck, you can always go to my myspace and listen to a crappy, compressed version of it.

if you have any constructive criticism or just nice comments, feel free to leave them on either of those pages, or here.

thanks for listening, ahead of time.

the best part is that it's free, open source, and you can download it directly from the site.

you know when you get into a band that's been broken up for a long time? like joy division or bauhaus? and sometimes, you have no hope of ever seeing that band play again (joy division), but sometimes you do, and you get to...twice (bauhaus).

other times, it's more than a band. it's an entire movement. something that effects you so deeply it changes the way you look at things. for me, that was throbbing gristle. they've been back together for a few years now, released some really excellent stuff, but consistently insisted that they would not tour the US. but they lied. they are playing at coachella, SF, NY, and FUCKING CHICAGO! and not only that, they are playing at the empty bottle, for twenty dollars a ticket. this is one of the most incredible things i have ever come across, and i can't even begin to describe how i feel right now. and that's not even to mention the fact that courtney will be joining me.

i think i re-set a record for myself. tonight, i wrote, recorded, mixed, and finished a song in only a few hours. it's been a long time since i was able to write, start and finish a song all in one session. and besides that, it turned out perfectly (according to how i wanted it). i really cannot stress how much i love this song.
so if you have three minutes (yes, i know, it's short, for me), please take a listen to the gift-horse

sorry i barely exist on LJ anymore. i've been busy. as of a few minutes ago, it's my birthday. i'm 22. i'm on my new computer. since i had to get it for school and not really by choice, i'm going to buy myself a bit of a birthday present, but i haven't settled on what yet. at the moment, it's between a nintendo DS (what i got for courtney for x-mas, along with phantom hourglass) and a game, or the guitar hero world tour band kit for x-box 360. any suggestions?

hope you're all doing well. <3
